Pacifica Shipping to offer market-leading 3.5-day frequency with launch of second dedicated coastal vessel, “MV Takutai Chief”.

Pacifica Shipping, the leading coastal shipping operator in New Zealand, has announced the introduction of our second coastal vessel. “MV Takutai Chief is a 1300TEU container vessel and will  complement the existing New Zealand inter-island domestic freight services provided by 1700 TEU MV Moana Chief.

This significant investment reflects Pacifica Shipping’s long term commitment to ensuring New Zealand’s supply chain has reliable access to the most environmentally sustainable transport solution, and further encourage the modal shift of heavy cargo off road/rail, and onto The Blue Highway.

19 September 2022 MV Takutai Chief will commence a weekly service calling Auckland, Lyttelton & Tauranga , and Timaru or Marsden Point on alternating weeks. With both vessels deployed in tandem on the coast, Pacifica will deliver a market-leading 3.5-day frequency between Auckland, Lyttelton and Tauranga.

Pacifica’s expanded coastal network and service enhancements include fixed-day fortnightly calls into Timaru and a return to weekly frequency through Nelson.

As Jan-Hendrik Hintz, Line Manager for Pacifica Shipping explains “having two vessels enables Pacifica to better meet growing demand for reliable inter-island domestic freight delivery, and at the same time improve resilience and increase coverage to regional ports, including a fortnightly fixed-day Timaru call”.

“Aside from the additional capacity, the increased frequency will help to smooth the flow of cargo volume through the domestic supply chain and take pressure off pack & devan sites”.
