Mr. Thimira S. Godakumbura appointed as the new CEO & MD of Colombo Dockyard PLC
Colombo Dockyard PLC appointed Mr. Thimira S. Godakumbura as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Managing Director (MD) of the company to take over from Mr. D.V Abeysinghe who stepped down as MD/CEO after 7-year tenure.
The announcement was made at the 40th Annual General Meeting (AGM) that took place today 19th April 2023 at the Galadari Hotel Colombo.
Before being appointed as the MD/CEO, Mr.Godakumbura was the Chief Operating officer (COO) of the company for one and half years. He brings more than 22 years of experience in different capacities starting as a trainee engineer in the year 2000. He has served as the Assistant Production Manager (Hull Construction), Special Projects Manager, Assistant General Manager (New Construction, General Manager (Design & New Construction) and General Manager (Production). He has many local and overseas training experiences and extensive exposure on Ship Repair, Ship Building and Quality Control at Dry Dock World UAE and Onomichi Dockyard in Japan.
Mr.Godakumbura is a Mechanical Engineering graduate passed out in 1999 from the University of Moratuwa Sri Lanka. He holds a MBA from the Postgraduate Institute of Management (PIM) , University of Sri Jayewardenepura.
He is a Charted Mechanical Engineer, Corporate member and a Fellow of the The Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka. He was the Chairman of the Mechanical Engineering Sectional committee (MESC) of IESL for the year 2021/2022. In addition to that he is a Fellow of the Royal Institute of Naval Architects (RINA) in UK and a member of the Indian Technical Committee of Nipon Kaiji Kyokai (Class NK).
Addressing at the AGM, Mr.Godakumbura praised the extensive support from the parent company Onomichi Dockyard and the leadership and guidance of the current Chairman Mr. HIDEAKI TANAKA.
With his forward-thinking leadership style Colombo Dockyard is confident that Mr.Godakumbura will take on the challenges and opportunities ahead with great excellence and ensure further growth of the company with the capable team around.
Outgoing MD/CEO Mr. D.V Abeysinghe will continue to serve the company board as an Executive Nominee Director leaving 38 years’ wealth of experience behind him.
During his long tenure at Colombo Dockyard, he has served in many managerial positions in various divisions. He was appointed to Colombo Dockyard PLC (CDPLC) Board on 08/11/2016 as the Managing Director/CEO.
Mr. Abeysinghe got his degree in the field of Mechanical Engineering from the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka and joined Colombo Dockyard in 1985.
He is a Charted Mechanical Engineer and a Fellow Member of the The Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka and a Fellow Member of Royal Institution of Naval Architectures UK.
